A Few of My Favorite Things: The 2015 Edition

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 5.50.14 AM

We’re still fairly early in 2015 and I have already found five things I adore. This is a pretty diverse list but what can I say? I’m pretty well-rounded!

Azealia Banks’ Album – Broke with Expensive Taste

Regardless of the Twitter drama, I’m really loving this album. It’s not an album for the youngins as she’s very explicit but she also isn’t your typical hip hop artist. She expresses herself through Baltimore-club sounding songs, grimy hip hop, and even has a Beach Boys-esque song. There will definitely be at least one song to fit your mood. My personal favorites are 212 and Chasing Time.

Wanderlust: Where In The World Do I Wanna Go?

California

Like most people, I absolutely love to travel. While my finances don’t always support my wanderlust, it doesn’t hurt to dream! My husband and I both enjoy traveling and we’re in agreement about some the places we want to go. Most of these are pretty standard but I still wanted to share them with you.

California

Sadly, I have yet to visit the west coast. I have always found Cali interesting and can’t wait to get out there. In-N-Out burger, sunny skies, Bay Area accents? Sign me up!

Operation Bust Back Into Onederland

In my last post, I talked about resetting my hair regimen because I’m not seeing the results I want. Remember how excited I was to walk into Onederland? It was awhile ago and I’ve been skirting its borders for quite some time but I was a fairly upstanding citizen. Unhealthy behavior always catches up with you, though. Not exercising, not drinking water like it’s my job and overindulging have landed me outside of Onederland.

Looking back over my previous endeavors, I haven’t always set the most realistic goals. I’m not going to drive myself crazy or beat myself up but it IS time for a change. There are 66 weeks until my 30th birthday so I’m shooting for 1lb each week until then. If I can do this successfully, I will hit my goal weight!

Reworking My Hair Regimen to Reach Bra Strap Length

Staying consistent is one of my biggest challenges. One of the ways that manifests is my hair journey. I have been at this for over five years (!!!) and my hair has been as long as below shoulder blade and a short as neck length. I’m currently grazing arm pit length but I intend to hit bra strap length by the end of 2015. I don’t have many new year’s resolutions but I know this is a good time to restart my hair regimen.

MY REGIMEN
- Clarify wash once a month
– Shampoo and deep condition using heat weekly (or bi-weekly)
– Light protein treatment every two weeks
– Air dry hair using t-shirt method unless wearing roller set or protective style
– 5000mcg of Biotin daily
– Moisturize and seal 3-4x times per week
– Exercise 3-4 times per week
– Drink 64 ounces of water daily
– Stretch relaxer at least 16 weeks
– Heat pass once a month

Why I Plan to Fail in 2015

I recently had an epiphany that has irrevocably changed my life. I can’t believe I’m going to share it with you but I think you deserve to know: I’m human and I fail. A lot. People share their highlight reels on social media so we never see the hustle, struggle, and mishaps that go into making people successful and noteworthy.

There is a lot of pressure to always have perfectly coiffed hair, flawlessly applied makeup, and the wittiest of responses. While that makes for tons of likes, double taps, and retweets where does that leave the mere mortals among us? Are those of us who try and fail simply doomed for a life of disappointment?

Protective Styling Series: My First Crochet Wig

Me_Crochet_Wig

I’m 14 weeks post and I’ve been itching to install a protective style since Thanksgiving. So far, my favorite protective styles have been cornrows with Marley twists and crochet braids. Since moving to the Bronx from Queens, I no longer live near any salons I know or have my live-in stylist: my mom. There are probably plenty of places I could go for braids but I work best off of referrals, not blind luck.

Couple my difficulty finding a stylist with the somewhat prohibitive cost of protective styles and you’ll understand what’s taken me so long. I’ve been quoted $100-$140, plus hair! My low funds (and general laziness) have resulted in me getting Dominican doobies every 3 weeks and neglecting my hair in between. My hair is growing but is definitely suffering from my indifference.

Five Tips for (Relatively) Stress-Free Wedding Planning

Tai_Jordan_Veil

I know I haven’t posted in forever but today is my six month halfiversary! It’s hard to believe we’ve been married for half a year but this has been a great learning experience so far.

I can tell you that the weekend before our wedding was the most stressful one either of us have ever had. Between running last minute errands and signing for our first apartment, it was insane. But we made it through to tell the tale. Since I’ve successfully survived planning my own wedding, I want to share some tips to ensure your big day is relatively stress-free.

Weigh-in Wednesday: Scaling Back on the Scale

I know as well as anyone that the scale is not the most accurate marker to track weight loss. Everyone’s weight fluctuates throughout the day and we women have the added bonus of our monthly courses that can make it appear we’ve had a setback.

Even armed with this knowledge, I’ve recently gotten hooked on weighing myself daily and sometimes *gulp* multiple times a day. I found myself doing this at time when my nutrition and fitness weren’t on point hoping for some magical result.

Is Your Spouse Your Bestie?

In my lifetime, I’ve been blessed with an amazing set of friends who have stuck it out through the long haul. Now that I’m engaged, I have another person in my life who I share my deepest, darkest secrets with and who’s obligated to listen. Score! Would I go so far as to call him my best friend? I’m not sure but he’s definitely a member of my inner circle.

Here’s the thing. I find that lots of women call their fiancé/husband their BEST FRIEND but that term is so exclusive. I mean, you have a best friend and the the rest are simply average friends? Do you rate your buds on a scale of worst to best? How often should you reevaluate this system? Does the person you’re building your life with have an unfair advantage?

Healthier, Wealthier You Challenges: February and March Updates

I know I’ve been super MIA for a hot minute but I’m back! My absence has been due in part to being inconsistent and poor time management on my part. This post will serve as a quick update for February and March on how I’m faring with the Healthier, Wealthier You challenges.

1. Brown Bag Lunch: In February I fell off bringing my meals because I didn’t do proper grocery shopping. Towards the end of the month I finally got it together and I’ve been brining meals since then. I usually have oatmeal for breakfast, two fruits as snack during the day, and home cooked leftovers for lunch.
